Title: VQ35 top speed and general thoughts?
Post by: GillieJet20 on March 17, 2020, 09:52:57 AM
Hi All,

Considering a re-power of a 4.4m ali boat... I'd be grateful for people's experiences.

I understand that VQ35's are considered to go similar to/a bit better than a Lexus v8.

What is the top speed you have achieved in your VQ35 powered boat and under what conditions (upstream/downstream/lake)?

Please also list boat size and jet unit specs.

How do you rate the holeshot and mid-range punch?

Fuel economy at cruise?

Cheers!

With a good dyno Tune 300hp is easily achievable and if that?s not enough force feed them they go real good then.

I have a VQ35 hooked to a scott 812 in a 4.1 westlander

Dyno?d  at 297hp @5700rpm by AVR

I run the smallest 107mm NZ for response. And get the below

Lake & river up 80kph, down 90kph all at 4500rpm which is WOT.

From memory I was getting another 200rpm / 5-10kph on the 114mm noz

I feel like I should be getting another 1000rpm out of my set up but unsure wether tps (I?m using stock throttle) or the pitch of the blades are holding it back. Adam @ jettec recon?d that in a smaller unit I could make those revs but 4500 was normal given my unit n noz

All that said im more than happy with the performance. Holeshot is within own length and planes nicely at 3000rpm
I get 16ltrs per hour 3up

Thanks Sam!

That's good to know all that.

I have a Scott 752 in a 440 Rapid Runner so perhaps I might be able to see some higher revs with my smaller unit. Does it feel like a fairly nimble package? Not too bad to push when stuck?

pjl - boosted, I bet that goes good. Not too keen on turbos myself but i see that there are a few Stillen top mount roots blower kits for vq35s for sale in the US...

Cheers

I have a mate in club with a 4m LVB hull, vq35 and flo pro 7.5" 2 stage.
It goes well, I have driven it, minimum plane about 2800rpm, cruises nice 3000-3500rpm
Flat out 5100rpm with 108mm nozzle. Not sure on top speed but guess about 80ish ks?
Only complaint is the noise.

Have another mate installing one now, weighed engine and it was 150kg bare, looking at about 175-180kg fully dressed, raw water cooling

Hv done a few , with a 7.5 unit they rev quicker but are not as user friendly as the smaller grill doesn?t like stones or thrash  and when impeller goes off guide noticeable compared to a 8. Unit or bigger
The motor usually owe about 10 k  buy time tuned and water set up etc
Go for maxima motor
Go more places than a Ls 1 power boat because of weight

Mine is a very low km maxima motor. Everything is water jacketed apart from the external wastegate so it runs quite cool. Originally the boat was NA for the first 12hrs but  VQs are quite vocal and there?s always a need for more power so my mate who did All the work fitting it out recommended silencing  it with a turbo worked a treat   One miner thing I have to use BP 98 octane or NPD 100 octane.

Explorer - interesting to know. I specifically stuck with a 7.5" unit for its ability to draw less water in marginal take-off situations, in my experience driving boats with larger units, they tend to suck up stones off the bottom of a hole more readily. I find my Scott 752 copes with plenty of trash in the grill, much more so than my Hamilton 2 stage 7.5" behind an SR20DET in a Jet 20. Good to know but I'm kind of stuck with working with the Scott 7.5" unit now.

pjl - how do you find the lag when stomping it from a standstill? Any worse than an NA motor? Where are you based? If in Christchurch I'd be keen to take a look at your set up once the lockdown is over.

Cheers all!

From a standstill probably 2 seconds Then it launches hard and no lag when your moving instant throttle response. I?m in the Ashburton area.

After the Home Detention is over you can take a look at ours if you want as I will be chomping the bit to get on the water. Running the VQ in a 4.3m with Scott 752. Quick out of the hole and planes at 2800rpm. Cruise the waimak between 3400 and 3800rpm. Not sure on WOT rpm but over 5000 as I'm pretty keen to watch where I'm headed and not focus on the counter.....

I recon it?s a nimble package as it hasn't done anything I don?t want it to yet. That said its my 1st boat and I am only 40hours deep.

I boated with a couple of Jettec's running VQ?s hooked to 7.5 Flowpro?s both planed at 3500 and rev?d to over 5k

Seemed to have to feed it a bit more than mine.

Sam - interesting, probably makes sense, larger unit can shift more or the same amount of water for less rpm (set-up aside).

Where are you based?

Cheers

Hi Sam,

Just put a VQ35 and Scott 802 8" in my Hamilton 132, I pulled out of it a lexus and 773, once the lockdown is over will let you know speeds etc as I have only had it in the water once.

Cheers
