in this river the rocks are quite sharp and sometimes elongated downstream so cant see them! Everyone left their seats at some stage and a few ali swarfs left behind.. no dents as we kept speed way down all day

In my experience they do more than not having plastic (less grab, plus a little give) but as Mathew suggests they can also hide the dents when you do get them, speaking from experience.
