Lower Waitara Saturday 20th of May
« on: May 15, 2017, 16:56:58 PM »
The Lower Waitara River has a reputation as a "Boat Wrecker" and you don't have to look too far to find some evidence of that. But in saying that, it can be boated it most flows if you approach it carefully and take your time to scout a line through each rapid. It's a funny fact that most of the people who "talk this river up" or paint it as a "no go zone" have only boated it once or not at all. I'm not try to talk anyone out of it, I boat it heaps and in the last 10 years haven't sustained any substantial damage (don't ask about the 10 years before that).

On Saturday the 20th we will be launching at the Waitara township ramp at 1.30 pm. It is only a short run of about 16 km each way, but bring gas for at least 2 hours. This run is open to all boaters, JBNZ members or not. Please have your boat running reliably and have some safety gear on board. This is not the type of river to be trying your boat out for the first time, checking that it's not over heating etc. If the flow is less than 1.9 meters at the Bertrand Road gauge, it's probably not advisable to bring a "traditional size boat".
So to spell it out - Damage may occur

Guys, There are quite a handful of brave souls coming so far.  b>
Keep in mind that we may change the launching spot to Tarata, depending on river flow, weather forecast, and how we feel on the day. We may also bring the launching time forward (mostly just to confuse any Northern Districts boys)  l-l.
Flick me an email if you are coming and I'll keep you posted.

Okey dokey, 9 boats at this stage. We have changed the launch spot to Hocken's farm at Tarata, 11 am.
For those who haven't launched there before, it's across private land so please respect that, there could be stock in the paddock, and the land owner drinks Steinlager Pure.

For the "Newage Guys" with the app, for directions - "EVENTS" tab - then click on "TARANAKI BRANCH - UPPER WAITARA" - then click the map and a little arrow comes to the bottom right corner of the map - click the "ARROW" and bingo Google maps directions right to the launching spot..... Flash eh, that's how we roll in 2017  O0
