Radio comms options between boats

Hi
Any advice/thoughts/experience on good options for communication between several boats i.e. uhf headsets or similar

On our recent trip some of the boats had  VHF radios mounted in there boats, the rest of us used hand held ones.

Pros and cons, Mounted ones are higher Watts so have a longer distance, hand held ones can be taken with you if you are wandering off to find a stuck/lost boat, etc

The vhf radios have mixed range, good in wide open areas but struggle with where we boat most places. Still handy though.
Some guys are using the motorcycle intercom headsets mounted in ear muffs. Seem to work well. I have ordered some to try, shortish range, about 1km I think?
