Waimakariri Gorge - 9th January 2021
« on: December 23, 2020, 15:01:51 PM »
Welcome to the first Canterbury branch event for the new year 2021.

If you are staying in Christchurch over the festive season or even a visitor from out of town or got friends and family visiting you, well then hey we got Saturday sorted.

Pack the picnic basket, fuel up the boat and bring one and all along for our annual family boating day up the magnificent Waimakariri river gorge.

This family event will be from the Waimak Gorge Bridge to the Esk Pool or there abouts.

This is a relatively easy trip and good for new boaters.
You will need fuel for 4 hours boating

Bring warm layers of clothing in the off chance the weather turns cool

Date: Saturday 9th January
Launching at 09:30 at Waimak Gorge Bridge
Briefing at 10:00
Departing at 10:15

Hi Everyone.
The run tomorrow is all go. The river is currently about 80 cumecs in the gorge and should be dropping slowly.

We are expecting up to 50 boats tomorrow so it will be busy on the river.

Launching will be at the Waimak Gorge bridge from 9:30am. We will send boats away in groups of 10 or so as they are launched to keep things moving.
There will probably be plenty of kayakers on the river training for the coast to coast. Make sure to give them plenty of room and give way to them if possible.

The plan is to boat up through the gorge and find lunch spots up from the Esk river.
We will probably be spread out for lunch as finding a single spot for all the boats will be a challange.

It will be very important that all boats take extreme care when launching and stopping to park up during the day.
This should be done a displacement speed to avoid making large wakes that can cause boats to bang together or swamp them.
Please be considerate of other boats.

Thats all for now.
See you on the river tomorrow.

Cheers
Gary (GAZ)

Thanks everyone for coming along to the waimak run today. 46 boats. No major dramas. Thanks to all the committee and other helpers for making the day run so smooth.  Cheers Gary (GAZ)
