Nelson blast to Haast
« on: April 24, 2006, 11:37:24 AM »
Heres some pics of our Easter trip to Haast. Had a great time, 11 hours boating, weather was pretty good and even topped up the rivers before our arrival.

Thursday Paringa down stream from bridge & up into Lake Paringa.
Few smallish channels to play in. There are some big rock if low flow.

Friday, Arawata, Jackson and Lake Ellery. Good boating but Arawata gets better after an hour or so. We turned around just before this...
Jackson boney, Lake beautiful.

Sat, Wiatoto, great boating big rock and one good rapid to try. Then Turnbull (next to camp), short fun trip with heaps o logs.

Sunday Haast, big wide and heaps of water. Buzzed by very low helicopter. One boat hit big rock and got some air time. 19 deg hull + shallow = bad

Monday Waita river into Maori Lakes. Weedy, loggy, flaxy creek. Goes for ages. Would not bother with this again.

8 boats 21 people and most expensive place in country to buy gas (after Stewart Island) = great fun weekend.? ?Town gas prices seem cheap now.

Boat went really well, I ended up being the rescue boat. Towed 3 or 4 boats. Had to tow one of the red racers, shes 1.8 tonnes (includ trailer) and didnt even use full throttle to get up on the plane. Those blue units are awesome.

Awesome pic's.  Awesome place.
Did anyone boat the big rapid in the Waiatoto, just past those sandy bends in the pic's. Look's to be enough flow...

And did you's get to the 10 hour in the Arawata.

Ps.
It pay's to do a head-count after each night down there.....(he said as he reached for his old banjo) ;D ;D
