Fire Hazzard - fuel injected boats
« on: July 12, 2007, 19:18:53 PM »
recent jba story told of the typical steel fuel filter failure used in many jet boats,  which caught fire.

In many of these steel filters (often painted, nickel plated or similar) the hose connectors are welded in place and are the subject of corrosion and fracture. I inspected many at repco and most appeared flawed. Could not find a plastic type fuel filter to suit injection pressures.

However did find an alloy one which does not have welded hose connectors. These are for V8's so should flow just about any motor.See photo and part number attached.

You can get problems on the low pressure side of the fuel system as well, CAV filter cartridges can rust through and give pin hole leaks if not changed often enough, my brother had close call on his 350, lots of fuel in bilge.

agree greg, they are not expensive (about $10 ryco brand). I replace mine every year and they also come with a full set of new gaskets for the fuel water separator.

A question on the Cav filters, as i am just about to buy one. Is it myth or fact that because they are designed for diesel they need to be plumbed in differently when used with petrol?

greg
just buy the universal fit ryco type, about $69 and $10 for the oil filter replacements, they are the same as the Delphi brand..  you can get them at BCF (boating camping fishing)

don't know about the myth, they have 'in' and 'out' clearly marked on them, not a lot to get wrong.

if you cant get them in the ACT let me know and i will pick one up for you

Had a 400 chev (mildlly warm) running through cav filters, engine used to lean out at full throttle untill we drilled out inlet and outlet holes on top plate
any body had same experience

The Delphi ones wont flow enough on larger motors ( I think they are only good for about 40L/hr  :-\ ) so you do need to drill them them out bigger and re tap to get them flowing a higher rate, Mike can probably tell us what size he does them too.

Wrongway, they work fine on petrol.

The diesel / petrol thing could be the fact that these filters are not supposed to be used for 2 stroke mix, although in my ignorance, I've used them for outboards without a problem.
A worthwhile modification to CAV filters is to discard the pissy plastic drain bung on the bottom and replace it with a brass drain fitting found on the bottom of a storage tank for a domestic oil heater.

FOR WATER IN FUEL TANKS>   The reason why we reverse flow using the CAV 296 [glass bowl ] filter is when using in a boat we pick up water and rubbish in the fuel tank and if installed as the arrows show ,the water and rubbish soak through the filter downwards and filters do not last . but if you reverse the flow against the arrows  you can see the water before it touches the filter ,rubbish in the glass bowl  and have a chance to clean it out ,filter will then last for many hours ,  We have been using this method for the last 40years when using this CAV 296 , we drill out the inlet holes to 8.5 mm [original hole only 6.mm] [ where the holes go to the centre] and drill out the other holes to 10mm and retap the thread  to 1/4 bsp  I hope this help but note suitable only up to 45 lph slightly more when drilled out

If you screw a bsp fitting into the npt hole you run the risk of cracking the housing creating an air / fuel leak !
You can buy 1/4 npt fittings  with tails to suit your requirements

Pretty sure 1/4 and 3/8 are the same TPI between NPT and BSP. Larger sizes are a bit different though.
As Hayshed says, NPT fittings are available from various outlets.
In Christchurch, Sydenham Park Chev Spares and Japanese Race Supplies have a good range of dash size fittings at a reasonable price.

further to the fire hazard with automotive steel/welded filters (as reported in the JBNZ  mag) I have just fitted a new filter system on the high pressure side of the pump. this does away with the alloy filter posted at the start of this thread,  which was an improvement, while strong and corrosion resistant the "barb" fitting was not ideal as it was not designed for hose clamp use...

I have now fitted a serviceable filter with AN fittings. this allows easy removal of the filter at any time and the filter element (stainless steel) can be checked/cleaned. the high quality fittings and hose will ensure a reliable seal.
