How do you do a 'wheel alignment' with duratorques??
« on: September 16, 2011, 20:17:18 PM »
What's the process to do a 'wheel alignment' with duratorques, especially if you've got four of them??

If you've only got two duratorques, then I guess you'd try and put a straight edge along the units?  However that has it's problems, in that the mounting brackets stick out and affect your straight edge. Also, it doesn't mean it's perpendicular to the trailer axis.

When you've got four duratorques it gets even more difficult and I don't know how to sort it out....

Cheers.

best way ive found is do it is make sure your rims are straight and true and do your measurements directly from the rim surfaces as i have yet to see any one duratorque that has the stub axle perfectly aligned to the suspension unit, a while ago at work we replaced the suspension on a tandem trailer with duratorques, we're pretty fussy so spent ages getting the units aligned down to the millimetre with the chassis only to put all the wheels on & find that even the most blind hewer would take one look and think we fitted them after a hard night out on the turps l-l

my method (single or tandem same principle applies) this is provided that you are using individual type duratorques not the full axle type, is to measure each side of the rim to the chassis & get them spot on first then measure from rim to rim on each side and provided your trailer is nice and square (most are usually within 5mm or so) the measurement should be the same on both sides, if not, adjust it equally on both rims until they are the same if you can understand?, up to about 5mm toe in or out wont really make sweet FA of a difference in tyre wear, same method applies for camber but in most cases the eyometer is good enough and you can just pack washers under the mounting brackets to adjust accordingly

its a simple easy method & works just as well as an optical toe gauge for a trailer as the specs are easy, 0 degrees!!
cheers

Straight edge across the hub faces on both hubs on both sides.
Make them parallel and then make sure the leading hubs are the same distance to the tow point. This means the axle group is parallel with the trailer centreline provided the tow point is central to the outside rails.

With new trailer.  Always give 3mm toe in as the trailer is pulled down the road the drag pulls them straight. Or you will chew  out the inner tyre  just my  2c
