new trailer
« on: February 26, 2012, 09:25:49 AM »
I have finished building a new tandem axle trailer for a Jet 83. I am not sure as to how far forward to slid the sub spring assembly as I do not have the unit and motor. It would be grateful if someone can give me a measurement from the back of the trailer to the centre of the stub of the back wheel.

From experience

I have found the front pulley of the motor will line up with the front of the trailer wheels {approx}
if you make your spring hangers attach to angle then slide the angle forward and back with the boat in position till you get a minimum of 25kg on the tow hitch
then drill and bolt the angle trough the trailer chassis
if you then drive the unit and get excessive "pig rooting" move the angles rearward to get more weight on the draw bar and re drill in the new pozzy

The length you want depends if you have the transom overhanging the rear of the trailer. My J83 has a bit of overhang. The centre of balance on mine is 180cm from the transom and the wheels either side of that mark. That 180 cm measurement matches the front pulley of 350 chev. Phils estimate is probably correct for a smaller boat, but J83 has a lot of cabin. I also have the winch and notch on a pinned slide so the boat can be adjusted on the trailer if it has lots of gear (big hunting or fishing trip) in the cabin.
