We would cut, weld or re drill the pin in the vertical shaft so forward was up close too the screen and reverce was almost strait back at 6 oclock .
you get used too most things over time.
Sounds like Zymes' bellcrank  was to starboard, or did not use the lever on the unit to reverse the motion.  My old setup was almost like Mohawk's: forward ~4pm; neutral ~7pm; reverse ~10pm.  Think my boat is fairly wide, so if the post is in the centre of the boat, it means the handle is miles away from the seat/you, which makes it more difficult.  I guess that's probably less of an issue on narrower boats.

Try your steering in reverse theory with a coggan or turbine reverse bucket and see how you get on ... I got sick of crashing into stuff and choped the bucket off my coggan pump
Until 8 years ago, all I'd ever known was cars/outb***ds, so jet's felt wrong to begin with - but was very easy to adapt too.  Having the bucket mounted on the nozzle (not tail housing) changes the behaviour back to the car/outb***d behaviour.

My reverse setup is a factory setup 1969 colorado. I have noticed the lever works about face to other twist setups on boats of similar age.

The twist pole is hard up against the side of the bilge, so only one way to work. Its an J83.

The original Hamilton set up is mint, and strong and simple.  You pull back towards you to get nuteral   ( not left -right ) and around too the left abit for reverse.
It always felt alot more natural too me than pretty little levers all over the place  ::)
Nuteral is more than enough to stop any boat and jambing it in reverse something you shpould do when looking backwards  ;).
The main thing too watch for Ice is that the bucket is nice and high when going forward or youll find your boat putting the brakes on all by itself when you least expect it  O)))).......

Wow thanks for all the replies and advice. I just found an old picture from the trademe advt, the lever looks about 3.30- 4 oclock with the  bucket up, straight pull towards you for nuetral, and maybe  a tad more to the left for reverse. seeing as the whole system has been re-made  I will try this option first.  Yep im going to spend lots of time at our local lake learning just how these machines should behave, might take me awhile after being at the helm of heavy, prop driven, Rudder steered displacement boats for years.

Youl be happy as a pig in  *sick*    .... If there is weed in the lake make sure you have some way of getting it out .
You will find its pretty easy too get used too these things , going fast is easy but you need to practice useing the bucket and revs too manouver around trailers rocks and ramps.  B))T
