I think you have reached your prime regarding weld quality Mohawk! ()()
We all know that most of the time the weld is not to blame ;)

The truth is out there!

If you are truly interested in airing this dirty laundry then let's open it up shall we

I had a client turn up to my shop with a blown up ZX10 boat
Built by (un named)
He asked for advise and rough prices to repair or replace
All good so far

Next meeting with the client I find a very "Dodgy" install of a Suzuki Swift motor in place of the ZX10
The boat is "Dead in the water"

After some long hours and many "free parts" the "Zuki"
Is now going and client is happy

Next thing Client arrives back with exploded drive shaft?
I find the spline has been "Dodgy welded" and then ground and filed to fit the "Rooted" impeller (won't mention who organised this cock-up)

I then got some SAF 2205 machined for a replacement drive shaft
This was threaded and wound into the coupling (weak link)
A " keeper weld" was added at the outer end to prevent the coupling from un winding

Damage
The thread was wound completely off the shaft in the tightening direction

I might mention at this point that there has been NO charge from jetdesign at all for any of this work

I am now looking at machining a complete one piece drive shaft for the client
Also at no charge

I don't mind criticism but feel that FACTS are very important

I recently got a complete driveshaft machined with a spline each end from 2205. It's 20mm dia and matches the polaris rubber engine damper to the Seadoo jet pump, works mint.
I have some 30mm 2205 here left over from a job if you want a bit but i think that boat will need the jet unit angled or raised to get straight alignment?
I'm wondering if he had the driveshaft out of phase?

Do the splines hold up ok on the 2205 without any further hardening?

Mine has been fine but i havn't done many hours yet. If it's chattering then it will flog out, no matter what it's made of. I never liked to weld stainless driveshafts. the HAZ gets brittle.
There is not a lot of shock loading on a jet unit. I tested the jet unit shaft material on a few different jet units,
Newish 2 stage was 2205 duplex
Old Colorado 3 stage was 430 stainless
Brand new aftermarket Yamaha stainless ski pump was the softest, dirty old 304L stainless.
I never tested the Kawasaki shaft but it wasn't that hard to machine.
Car axles are WAY harder. 2c
