I have all the bits off where the driveshaft joins the unit (front?) and have been attempting to remove the first impellor, but even with the jack set up, no luck. All i seem to be doing is making short bits of rope. The units is a 3 stage colorado that has been in the boat for 10 years. Ian Coleman reconditioned it for me when I put it in last time. Is the only other way to remove the impellers to use heat?

Brass, that's why I was a bit concerned about using Chains, as i thought they might damage them...

Maybe it depends on how beaten-up/cut-up the leading edges of the blades are? Try putting something (rags/ tape/ whatever), between the rope and the leading edge of the blade, so it's not just a knife-edge cutting through rope.

Hang on.  I really hope I've mis-understood you.
The blades come off the REAR of the shaft, not the front.

Post a picture.

In Mohawks pic he used a heavier chain, plus a bit of heat should shift it. I wonder what it was put on with? Great will glue them on pretty tight over time.

Ive got a real bad one off before when my bullet ate into my steel stator and burred the impellor up real bad.  Weld a frame for a bottle jack to the boss of the  impellor. And heat the heck out of the impellor and put oil on shaft and if your bottle jack is grunty enuff it will pull it off.
