Vq35 swap
« on: March 05, 2022, 21:41:55 PM »
Boat had a Rs legacy Subaru motor in it, went well.

Vq35 motor popped up for a good price , so decided to jump on it and get it .
I ain?t no fabricator but ain?t paying anyone to do it haha.

Running dry pipes flipped side for side for the moment until my friend and me make some stainless jacketed headers, motors running a haltech elite 1500, factory loom stripped down and pinned to the ecu.

Added in some new Veethree mechanical gauges , quality products

Should have final tune sorted this week coming , then will add more photos . Currently revving to 5100rpm with 87mm insert with no vvti (sensor issues) new Nissan ones in now .

Arco trim nozzle on the end of the old Colorado..

Is that a single stage.  If its only spinning a single stage to 5100rpm theres some wacky stuff going on.  It should rev a single stage too the moon.  Also double check that the green plug is hooked to trigger 2 and black to vvt.  Itl run wire the other way but youll never get the vvt working.  Also shield your trig 1 crank sensor wire

Yeah single stage , with a modified RX blade.

Wiring is fine , sensor issue common on these

Yeah same , the blade is spec?d for 6000rpm . Motor should rev it to there depending on nozzle size I Spose

I'm running a 3.5 litre Honda v6 in front of a modded colorado single stage:

Scott 19 Deg Bullet, southern jet trim noz, big shaft and 115mm noz opening.

The engine is only rated at 210 hp.

In my 3.4 m Westlander with 3 onboard (say 260kg of passengers) I am pulling 5600 rpm WOT

I was pulling 6200 rpm with a 15 deg southern bullet.

The VQ is a much more powerful engine so I would expect you should be pulling way more revs unless you are running a super coarse pitch.

Oh nice! What sort of speed did you see?

This is my blade here (bottem( , have inserts in the 770 tail cone to match the hub

Still getting noise in the sensors, crank wire isn?t shielded.. do you need to shield then other 2 x cams aswell or just the crank like you say?

The frequency of the crank signal, is often 20-40 times that of the cam signal.  Getting the crank signal shielded should be priority.  Also note that you only ground the shield at the ECU end (- do NOT connect the shield at the sensor end!).

Hey paul.  Correct me if im wrong but dont ya connect the sensor ground (for trig1/2 and di/vvt) to the wire sheild and then to the sheild/ground pinout on ecu?

Below is a few images I uploaded a couple of years back.  The diagram shows the sensor supply and ground wires, are totally non-connected to the shield - the shield also connected to ground elsewhere, away from the ECU.

What the shield is doing, is creating a protective layer around your high-frequency sensor wires, so that external RF sources (from HT leads/ radios/ etc), do not contaminate the signal before it gets to the ECU.

This wiring diagram also doesn't shield the cam sensor at all.

Are the vq35 sensors reluctor (2 wire) or hall effect (3 wire) I thought they were hall effect? In which case the shield is not really needed?
I was chasing similar issues with an old Haltech ecu on honda, losing trigger signal etc, tried shield etc, turns out the ecu could read the signal fine but software was getting confused with the missing teeth/speed while cranking. Changed trigger sewell and problem solved. None of the factory Honda trigger wiring loom is shielded, only thing that is shielded is the knock sensor.
Check your ecu settings, rising edge, falling edge etc...

Also make sure ya vvt and di are wired correctly.  It will run both ways but vvti wont work.  Green plug it trig 2 (bank1)  and vvt is black plug to di1

Shellild/gnd goes to sheild
And ground out goes too sensor - on all sensors including crank cam and vvt ect map tps

Got it sorted , was the rising vs falling on the crank trigger pick up.

Boat does 55km up stream currently at 4000rpm but only 30% throttle . So Built up and Re-pitched blade to what we think is close to 1.5kw ,  and will play around with nozzle sizes . Currently trying 90-95mm , May go to 85mm and work up from there .
