Engine Weights
« on: April 04, 2007, 16:27:14 PM »
We bought a set of 2 ton digital crane scales for "work" ;) last week so I decided to try them out on my 383 to see what the actual weights were instead of approximation.

So for anyone interested heres the comparrisons these are wet weights complete motor lifted straight out of boat.
Both motors are set up the same but I have listed the different components

383 Chev  #1                                            383 Chev #2
Alloy heads                                                Iron Eagle Heads
Alloy flywheel                                             Steel flywheel
Glenwwood log manifolds                             High rise alloy manifolds
Priority mixer                                              Priority mixer
Standard starter                                         Standard starter
Savage oil cooler                                         Savage oil cooler
9l of oil                                                      9l of oil
253kg                                                        276.3kg

Im hoping to weigh the marinised Lexus next to compare.

Interesting - I thought SB Chev would be heavier than this (presume they are iron block?).  I replaced a P76 with a 350 chev and would be interested if anyone could advise the weight of the Leyland P76?

Husky I am hoping to get the weight of a P76 as a mate has one sitting in his shed marinised for his toy.
As for the Lexus PM theres a flacid runner (The Motor not the driver ;D) taking up valuable realestate in your boat that i thought may need relocation to make way for bigger and better things. ::) ::)
Both the chevs are iron blocks.

Some more engine weights

Ford 302 comes in at 209kg

Ford 351 comes in at 238kg  longer stroke means taller block more weight

P76 comes in under these figures tho

The dressed weight of the LS1 & Ls2 is 206kg (458lbs). This is not marinised but includes everything in the pic plus oil. The attached PDF file, found on the net, has other examples - from a Porsche Carrera to BMW 335i (there are 2.2lbs / kg)

Cheers
Brian

the length of my 1999 vvti 2jztt is 29 inch long and the weight with cast manifold and twin turbos was around 250kg it will change when you throw all that crap away and put a  big single turbo and ss manifold on but by time you put in a big intercooler fuel pumps etc the weight will be the same cheers wils.

Wils, - Is 29 inches the length of just the block or total length including accessories?  Thanks.

Wils - I haven't completely decided yet, but I'm looking into putting a turbo 2JZ into an Eagle race boat.  I'm just trying to determine how the overall length of the 2JZ compares to the small block chev that I have now as we have everything moved back as far as possible limiting our space in the engine bay.

Just to clarify, your measurement is from the back or front of the crankshaft pulley?  Thanks again.

Just want to clarify: was it 241kg with or without the manifolds and flexplate?
