Jet Pre-Boating Checklist

Best Practice

Steering operates freely and is robust and in sound condition

All threaded fittings must have effective locking system i.e., tie wire, Nyloc nut etc.


A chain guide must be fitted to chain and sprocket systems.


Throttle operates freely, and cable connections are secure and in good condition

Minimum of two return springs, with either spring capable of closing the throttle.


Fuel lines & Tanks - Well secured and in good condition with no leaks

Appropriate NZ Fuel Line Standard for the fuel type used.Fuel filler to either drain overboard or have a spillage containment system.


Fuel Filter - With water trap unless using an EFI engine.


Fuel Shut Off Valve

  • Top of tank outlet, the fuel line to shut-off valve must be above top of tank.

  • Bottom of tank outlet, the shut off valve must be fitted directly to fuel tank.


Breathers - Vented overboard and 300mm of separation from any uncooled part of the exhaust.


Electrical - All Battery terminals, electrical plugs & wiring is secure and good condition.

Battery isolating switch to be fitted


Mechanical - Exposed moving parts must be enclosed.


Seats, battery, and windscreens must be well secured.


Collared PFD/Lifejacket is recommended. Check condition of all PFD/Lifejackets.


Bow Rope - 10m minimum length and 12 mm diameter attached to bow eye.


Bilge pump - In good working condition. Electric with min capacity of 4400 litres p/hour


Fire extinguisher - ATC or AFFF multi-purpose foam, min capacity 1.75 litre is recommended.

  • Service certificate within the previous 12 months


First Aid kit - As per JBNZ Safety Handbook plus thermal blanket and safety matches or lighter.


Communication - Two forms on board. Vhf radio, cell phone, Satellite phone, PLB etc.

  • Channel 6 is preferred with Channel 8 as backup.


Two paddles


Tools and reasonable spares


Knife to be accessible to release ropes in an emergency.


JBNZ registration sticker affixed to boat and trailer.


Flame Arresters - Where carbs or air inlets are enclosed, flame arresters are to be fitted.

  • Metal Mesh acceptable with at least 28 wires per 25 mm.


All Boats must be silenced to 80 dBa as per JBNZ Safety Handbook.
