Pre-Boating Reminders
Before you head out onto the river, Jet Boating NZ recommend that you:
CHECK -
Steering – Check all steering cables and joints are tight and do not show signs of wear. Lock wires on all D shackles and turnbuckles.
Throttle – Operation should be smooth and freely returns
Fuel – Lines and tanks are secure and in good condition
Electrical – All battery terminals, electrical plugs and wiring is secure and in good condition
Lifejackets – are in good condition, suitable for the boating to be done and sized correctly for those wearing them.
Safety equipment is in good condition and onboard –
▪ Push Poles
▪ Bow Rope
▪ PLB (Personal Locator Beacon)
▪ Radio – Channel 6 for boat to boat, Channel 16 for emergencies. The emergency call sign is “Break, Break, Break” Note: Your radio may not work in all inland waters
REMEMBER – Use the Pre Boating Checklist found in the Safety Handbook, and don’t forget about:
Helmets – it is strongly recommended that all people in the boat wear a helmet
Let someone know where you are going and an approximate return time.
Check the weather conditions – if in doubt, don’t go!
When on the river –
Keep to the right of the channel you are in, or wanting to boat in.
Boats heading upstream give way to boats travelling downstream.
Keep your distance – read your own water.
Be prepared to run aground in a potentially dangerous situation – it may be the best option.
Consider other river users
Alcohol – JBNZ advises sensible drinking when boating and strongly recommends no alcohol be consumed by drivers at any time when boating, or when boat driving is likely. Remember: Safer when Sober
